High Level Cleaning & Dust Extraction: Why It’s a Safety and Compliance Priority
Elevated surfaces such as rafters, beams, light fittings, pipework, ducting, roof structures and overhead machinery are among the most neglected areas in commercial and industrial facilities. Out of sight and difficult to access, they accumulate dust, debris, pest harbourage and combustible material that poses real safety, compliance and operational risks.
Our high level cleaning service is a specialist, high-risk offering that addresses these areas safely and systematically — and for many facilities, it is not optional.
The Risks of Neglected Elevated Surfaces
Combustible dust accumulation
In manufacturing, food processing, pharmaceutical and woodworking environments, dust accumulation on elevated surfaces is a serious fire and explosion hazard. SafeWork Australia’s guidance on combustible dust identifies overhead accumulation as a primary risk factor. Regular removal of accumulated combustible dust can form an important part of managing fire and explosion risks and maintaining a safe working environment.
Contamination in food environments
In food processing facilities, dust, debris and pest activity on overhead structures poses a direct contamination risk to product. Third-party food safety audits consistently identify inadequate high level cleaning as a non-conformance.
Pest harbourage
Birds, rodents and insects use elevated structures for nesting and harbourage. Regular inspection and cleaning of overhead areas as part of an integrated pest management program is essential for food safety and biosecurity compliance.
Equipment performance
Dust accumulation on light fittings, ventilation systems and electrical equipment reduces performance and can create fire risk. Regular cleaning extends equipment life and supports energy efficiency.
Regulatory compliance
Work Health and Safety legislation imposes a duty of care to maintain safe working environments. Where accumulated combustible dust or debris presents an identified workplace risk, appropriate controls are required as part of the facility’s WHS risk management processes.
What High Level Cleaning Involves
High level cleaning is fundamentally different from ground-level cleaning. It requires:
- Access equipment — elevated work platforms (EWPs), scissor lifts, boom lifts or scaffolding, depending on the height and configuration of the structure. All equipment must be operated by trained, competent personnel.
- Working at heights competency — staff must hold relevant working at heights training and, where required, the appropriate high-risk work licence for EWP operation.
- Appropriate equipment — industrial vacuums with HEPA filtration for dust extraction, specialised attachments for beams and pipework, and where required, pressure washing for structural cleaning.
- Safe work method statements — documented SWMS for all high-risk activities, reviewed and accepted before work commences.
- Sequencing with other activities — high level cleaning must always precede ground-level cleaning in the same area, so that any dislodged dust or debris can be captured during the subsequent clean.
- Documentation — photographic records and completed cleaning checklists demonstrating that elevated areas have been addressed.
How Often Should High Level Cleaning Be Done?
There is no single cleaning frequency suitable for every facility. The appropriate schedule will depend on the operating environment, the rate and type of dust accumulation, production activities, food safety or other compliance requirements, and the level of risk.
As a general guide, cleaning frequencies may include:
- Food processing and pharmaceutical — quarterly, with more frequent cleaning in high-risk production areas
- Manufacturing and industrial — six-monthly as a baseline, or more frequently where combustible dust or significant accumulation is identified
- Warehousing and logistics — annually as a baseline, more frequently in facilities with significant dust-generating activities
- Commercial and office — annually, typically incorporated into a broader deep-cleaning program
In all cases, a site-specific risk assessment should inform the cleaning frequency. Facilities with high dust generation, food safety obligations, combustible materials or other identified risks may require more frequent high level cleaning.
